More Americans Are Moving Abroad in 2025 — With Greece Emerging as a Top Choice

September 4, 2025

The number of Americans moving abroad has risen sharply in 2025, with Greece increasingly standing out as a favored destination.

A report from CS Global Partners, based on U.S. Federal Register statistics, shows that 1,285 U.S. citizens expatriated in the first quarter of 2025 — more than double the number recorded in the last quarter of 2024. If the trend continues, this year could surpass 2020, when a record number of Americans left during the height of the pandemic.

The report identifies Europe as the leading destination for American expatriates, and highlights Greece as a particular draw. While the motivations vary — from political polarization and public safety concerns in the U.S. to investment incentives and lifestyle opportunities abroad — Greece’s combination of affordability, climate, and accessible residency programs has placed it firmly on the radar.

The rising trend reflects a broader shift that has been building for more than a decade. While only a few hundred Americans expatriated annually before 2009, recent years have seen numbers in the thousands. Official figures may understate the true scale, as many Americans abroad do not formally renounce their citizenship or residency status.

With expatriation on track to reach new highs, Greece’s role as one of the top destinations suggests that the country will continue to attract a steady flow of new arrivals from the U.S. in 2025 and beyond.
